DanceStation News: August 2011

Welcome back dancers! Whether you joined us for our summer sessions, or took the summer off, we hope you had a wonderful summer vacation. Just some friendly reminders to get the year going:

Registration/Open House. Everyone needs to register for classes again this year! A $10 Registration Fee per family is due upon registration ($25 for new families) as well as a $10 recital fee (if you are moving or cannot participate in the recital, there is no fee). You can register by mail or in person at the Open House. Open House is Friday, August 26th from 4-6:30 pm. Even if you register by mail you may want to come to Open House to pick up your recital pictures and DVD’s. Plus it’s a chance to visit with friends and get some punch and cookies too! If you are unable to attend the Open House or would like to register early, you may register by mail anytime between now and August 26th. Please send your check and the registration form/class list to:
DanceStation
220 West State St
O’Fallon, IL 62269

Desk/Phone help. This year Stephanie Spradling, Ragan Faulkner, Katherine Feist, and Molly Schwarz will answer phones and help out at the front desk. Thanks girls!!! The girls will hold office hours Monday through Thursday 3:30-5:30 or 6pm in the fall. I will do my best to answer the phone whenever possible. If there is no answer, I am probably teaching. However, the machine is always on, and I will check the messages nightly. Phone calls for student absences are greatly appreciated, and I will try to return all questions and messages promptly. You can also email me at edancestation@yahoo.com.

Recital fee. There is a recital fee of $10 per family due now with the registration fee. The recital fee is just to help cover the cost of the hall. The studio makes no money on this whatsoever.

Teachers. We are so blessed to have back the expertise of former director Lisbeth Brown. Lis will continue teaching pointe and Cecchetti (ballet). Our returning tap teacher is Sonya Doerr. She brings a wealth of knowledge and lots of enthusiasm to the studio. We also welcome back Jenny Battenberg as our modern teacher, and this year she will teach jazz and preschool as well. Jennifer Fischer is also returning to teach preschool, ballet, and a teen pom/dance class. Jenny is an alumni of DanceStation and also has taken her teachers Cecchetti exams through Grade 6. I will continue to teach all levels of ballet, Cecchetti, pointe, jazz, broadway, Pre/K classes, etc.

Classes begin this year on Tuesday, September 6th. Because the June recital is a week later this year (June 9th), we will be taking a 3 week winter/Christmas break. This is so that each semester has the same amount of weeks for equal tuition.

Adult classes: We are offering two adult classes this year. Each class needs at least five adults enrolled. So if you have friends that want to take, feel free to pass on the info. Adult Ballet is on Tuesday evenings from 7-8pm, and taught by Jennifer Fischer. She filled in for Lis a few times last year, and is happy to teach it full time this year. Adult Jazz/Cardio Fusion will be Wednesday nights from 7:30-8:30pm. Jenny Battenberg is an excellent jazz and hip hop teacher, and she will incorporate fun dance combinations as well as cardio work. If you like Zumba or Jazzercize, this class will be lots of fun! Beginners and experienced dancers welcome!!! **(Class times are set this year, and will not start and stop like they did last year. I think that pretty much doomed both classes last year)

Monthy newsletters: Please keep and read your newsletters. I know they seem long sometimes, but I spend a good deal of time on them to make sure that everyone gets dates and information well in advance. The September newsletter will contain a calendar for the entire year, it will be also available online at www.dancestation.biz.

Tuition reminders: Tuition is due with the first class of every month. I have yet to impose late fees because I just don’t want to go there. If you are unable to make your payment that first class, please speak to me (or email me) and we will work something out. Parents, please include a valid, updated email address on the registration form this year. I will send out missed tuition reminders by email this year – so I don’t waste money on stamps.

Lastly, the dress rehearsal and recital dates for next year are June 8 and 9th. Mark your calendars now! And please try and take your vacations after the recital. Missing the extra rehearsals the week before the recital is hard on your child and the children that dance around her. Also, I am looking at ways to split the shows so that we don’t have to worry about a sell-out again. It was great and exciting for the studio, and all the girls should be soooo proud, but it’s not fun to fight for seats to see your child. So I’ll be working on how to divide the afternoon show - which will also make it shorter.

Contact Info: If you need to talk to me personally - my home phone is 288 –7082.
I let all of my calls at home go through the answering machine,
so just leave me a message and I will call you back as soon as I can.
Even better, you can email me at: edancestation@yahoo.com

That’s it! Tuition costs have remained the same, as well as State Street company dues. Class descriptions, dance attire, weather policies, etc. are included in the pamphlet and on the website. New pictures, including many from last year’s recital, will be posted on our updated website. Recital pictures and DVD’s will be available at Open House.

Can’t wait to see you all!
Thanks, Elizabeth Conway

Announcements/Reminders: Lots and lots of information—PLEASE READ ON!!!

Picture Day is Saturday, May 28th; Pictures times will run from 9am – 6pm.
Pictures are taken by Photographique here at the studio and payments should be made directly to Photographique that day. We would appreciate it very much if you would show up for the group pictures, even if you choose not to buy any. The picture schedule will be posted in the waiting room later in May.

Dress Rehearsal is on Friday June 3rd at McKendree University’s Hettenhausen Center for the Arts. Maps are available in the waiting room the week before the show. Rehearsal for the Hansel and Gretel performance is from 11am-4pm. The Footloose and Fancy Free rehearsal is from 5pm-10pm. We cannot have any students arrive until after 10:30am because McKendree University has a function in the auditorium in the morning. Arrive any time after 10:30am to be ready to go at 11am.

Recital Day is June 5th at McKendree University. Showtimes are:
Hansel and Gretel 2:00 PM
Footloose and Fancy Free 7:00 PM

Tickets will be on sale at the front desk the week before the recital. Adult tickets are $8 and children (under 12) are $5.

Parents/guardians will need to pay for the 5th/June installment before you purchase your recital tickets. Once the recital is over, families take vacations and it can be difficult to track down missing payments. Most common June question: Why are you paying for a full month? Because tuition is calculated by the semester and then broken down into five equal payments for your convenience.

Sign up sheets for recital DVD’s and flowers will be in the waiting room. The cost of each DVD is $20. You must prepay by June 3rd (dress rehearsal day) to have a DVD ordered for you. Flower payments are not due until the day of the recital (upon pick-up). Also new this year – there will be a still picture DVD slide-show available to those interested. It will have up-close, still photographs of each dance and also some backstage pics as well. Examples of the pictures are hanging in the waiting room.

Sign up sheets for our summer sessions/camps are also in the waiting room. We have some fun classes, a new kid’s camp, and many guest teachers this summer. Please sign up by the end of May so we can have enrollment numbers for each session!

more info on the back….!!!!
7. Make up classes. There are still a few classes that will need an extra makeup class for missed snow/teacher illness days. Check with your teacher for your extra weekend rehearsal.

There IS class on Monday, May 30th, Memorial Day.

Full cast rehearsals The last week before the recital we have a few extra practices here at the studio. Because the ballet is a story, we need to have a full dress rehearsal here at the studio before we get to the stage at McKendree. This is very a busy week, but it all finishes in a nice polished show. J

Mon. May 30th = Jenny has all regular classes, 4-5pm Broadway Junior dress rehearsal
5-8pm Footloose and Fancy Free rehearsal, 8-9:30pm open for extra rehearsals

Tues. May 31st = no regular Tues classes,
Hansel and Gretel Dress Rehearsal 4:30-7pm, Pointe Demonstration 7-8pm, and
SSDC rehearsal 8-9pm

Wed. June 1st = Elizabeth’s PreK C and D classes will both meet from 6:30-7:30pm on this Wednesday. No Modern classes on Wednesday. Footloose and Fancy Free Dress Rehearsal 4-6:30pm, and Int and Adv B-way Dress Reh 7:30-9:30pm

Thur. June 2nd = regular Thur classes for Jazz/Tap I-IV. We may also run Modern jr piece. 6-8:30pm Jazz/Tap/Modern/B-way evening show only - Dress Rehearsal

please make good use of street parking during the large rehearsals

Costume instructions will be passed out when the costumes arrive later in May. Recital week is often confusing for new families, please call or come find me with any questions.

Have a wonderful month - see you at the recital!!! Thanks, Elizabeth

State Street Dance Company Auditions for next year are from 5:00-6:15PM on May 27th. Students should wear pink full-footed tights and a black leotard and have their hair in a bun. The audition will consist of ballet and jazz combinations. Students in Ballet IV and older, with minimum 4 years dance experience (or permission of the director), are all eligible to audition. Generally the younger students perform in 2-3 pieces, and the older students in 4 or more. Junior and Senior company members will rehearse the week of August 29-Sept 2 in the evening as well as Wednesday evenings in the fall. The SSDC performance is in January.

Reminders:

Parents - remind your children to wait for you indoors. Just trying to keep everyone safe!

Please try and arrive on time to all dance classes. Arriving more than 10 minutes late to class is very distracting and also dangerous to anyone who misses all or part of class warm ups.

Christmas/Winter Break: No classes Mon. Dec. 20 – Sun. Jan. 2

Weather Policy Reminder: If the schools in O’Fallon District 90 close due to poor weather conditions, dance classes are cancelled as well. If bad weather develops in the afternoon/evening while students are in school, I will leave a message on the machine if classes are cancelled. Please call and check the recording on the machine if you are ever unsure, or check the ticker on the website – www.dancestation.biz.

Mark your calendar! The winter State Street Dance Company concert is Saturday, Jan. 15th at McKendree University. The girls are very proud of their dances, and we would love to see you there. This year we have pieces from 6 different choreographers featuring many different styles of dance. We also have a guest company, Mouvement Dance Theatre, from Edwardsville, performing as well. It is truly a great show and a fun evening! So come and support your fellow DanceStation dancers, and show the younger generation of dancers what they have to look forward to. All proceeds go to the SSDC fund for future choreographers and student scholarship opportunities.

June Recital: Shortly after we return from break I will begin measuring and ordering costumes for this year’s recital on June 5th. Please let me know in January if your child will be unable to attend the recital, so that I don’t order them a costume. Every student will be ordered a costume unless I hear from you otherwise.

Guest Jazz Teacher – Every year I like to bring in a guest jazz teacher for a month to change it up a bit. Usually it has been in November, but due to scheduling conflicts that didn’t work out this year. However, I have found a talented jazz/hip hop teacher for the month of January. Her name is Erin Yanousek, and she has a dance degree from Lindenwood College. So look for a new face in January, and then I’ll be back teaching again in February – just in time to start recital pieces.

Please have a safe and wonderful break! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the teachers and staff at DanceStation!!!!

Welcome back dancers! Whether you joined us for our summer sessions, or took the summer off, we hope you had a wonderful summer vacation. Just some friendly reminders to get the year going:

Registration/Open House. Everyone needs to register for classes again this year! A $10 Registration Fee per family is due upon registration ($25 for new families). For your convenience, you may wish to include the $10 recital fee as well, although it is not due until November. You can register by mail or in person at the Open House. Open House is Friday, August 20th from 4-6:30 pm. Even if you register by mail you may want to come to Open House to pick up your recital pictures and DVD’s. Plus it’s a chance to visit with friends and get some punch and cookies too! If you are unable to attend the Open House or would like to register early, you may register by mail anytime between now and August 20th. The schedule, as always, is subject to change due to class sizes. Please send your check and the registration form/class list to:
DanceStation
220 West State St
O’Fallon, IL 62269

Desk/Phone help. This year Stephanie Spradling, Ragan Faulkner, Erica Cain, and Katherine Feist will answer phones and help out at the front desk.

There is a recital fee of $10 per family due in November. You can include the recital fee with the registration fee at the beginning of the year if you so choose. The recital fee is just to help cover the cost of the hall. I make no money on this whatsoever.

Teachers. We are so blessed to have back the expertise of former director Lisbeth Brown. Her knowledge and kindness are immeasurable. Lis will continue teaching pointe and Cecchetti (ballet). This year we welcome Jenny Battenberg as our new modern teacher. Jenny taught modern at our summer intensive and was very well received by all of the students. She also choreographed a piece for our January SSDC show. She holds a BFA in Dance from Lindenwood and is also an excellent jazz and hip hop instructor. Our returning tap teacher is Sonya Deorr. She brings a wealth of knowledge and lots of enthusiasm to the studio. An Adult Tap class will also be offered this fall on Thursday evenings, call for more information. Jennifer Fischer is also returning to teach preschool and ballet. Jenny is an alumni of DanceStation and also has taken her teachers Cecchetti exams through Grade 6. Welcome back Jenny!!! I will continue to teach all levels of ballet, pointe, jazz, broadway, Pre/K classes, etc.

Classes begin this year on Tuesday, September 7th. We will have a regular two -week winter break as well. No maternity leave needed this year.

In addition to Adult Tap, we are also offering Adult Ballet on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-8:30pm, and Adult Zumba Tuesday nights from 7-8pm. Beginners and experienced dancers welcome!!! We are shooting for at least 8 adults in each class this year - so if you have friends that want to take, feel free to pass on the info. Sonya has also offered to do a 6-week ballroom lesson sometime this fall.

Monthy newsletters: You can opt to receive the studio newsletters through email. Just print it clearly on your child’s registration form. I think I only sent out one or two last year. Yikes! After Cole was born, things were a little hectic for a bit. I will try my hardest to stay on top of emails and updating the website this year. But if you think I may have the wrong email address – please include it again. I will still send home the newsletters with the students, but many times the papers have a way of disappearing before they make it back to you.
The newsletters should always be posted on the website. So if you lose one or forget a date you can always check the website. www.dancestation.biz

Contact Info: If need to talk to me personally - my home phone is 288 –7082. I screen all of my calls at home through the answering machine, so just leave me a message and I will call you back as soon as I can. Even better, you can email me at: edancestation@yahoo.com
Also, I have some exciting news about two of our DanceStation dancers. Ragan Faulkner was the recipient of Ben Mielke’s $100 dance talent scholarship. He wanted to give it in person at the recital last year, but he was performing with the St. Louis Opera Theatre. The scholarship is for outstanding stage performance and musicality. And Erica Cain, who showcased a Broadway routine choreographed by our own Heidi Jorgensen, was awarded Miss O’Fallon 2010 over the summer. Congrats to both girls on their outstanding achievements and dance performances!!!

A calendar will be sent home with the students the first week of classes.
Reminder classes begin Tuesday, September 7.
Can’t wait to see you all! Remember to call with any questions!!!

Thanks, Elizabeth Conway

Welcome back dancers! Whether you joined us for our summer sessions, or took the summer off, we hope you had a wonderful summer vacation. Just some friendly reminders to get the year going:

1. Registration/Open House.
Everyone needs to register for classes again this year! A $10 Registration Fee per family is due upon registration ($25 for new families). For your convenience, you may wish to include the $10 recital fee as well, although it is not due until November. You can register by mail or in person at the Open House. Open House is Friday, August 21st from 4-6:30 pm. Even if you register by mail you may want to come to Open House to pick up your recital pictures and DVD’s. Plus it’s a chance to visit with friends and get some punch and cookies too! If you are unable to attend the Open House or would like to register early, you may register by mail anytime between now and August 21st. The schedule, as always, is subject to change due to class sizes. Please send your check and the registration form/class list to:
DanceStation
220 West State St
O’Fallon, IL 62269

2. Desk/Phone help. This year Tirssa Schaefer, Heidi Jorgensen, Anna Husemann, and Stephanie Spradling will answer phones and help out at the front desk. Thanks girls!!! The girls will hold office hours Monday through Thursday 3:45-5:30 or 6pm in the fall. I will do my best to answer the phone whenever possible. If there is no answer, I am probably teaching. However, the machine is always on, and I will check the messages nightly. Phone calls for student absences are greatly appreciated, and I will try to return all questions and messages promptly. And as always, you can also ask me in person.

3. Recital fee. There is a recital fee of $10 per family due in November. You can include the recital fee with the registration fee at the beginning of the year if you so choose. The recital fee is just to help cover the cost of the hall. I make no money on this whatsoever.

4. Teachers. We are so blessed to have back the expertise of former director Lisbeth Brown. Her knowledge and kindness are immeasurable. Lis will continue teaching all levels of pointe and Cecchetti (ballet) as well as taking most of my classes while I am out with the new baby…more on that later. This year we welcome Loryl Breitenbach as our new modern teacher. Last year Loryl choreographed a piece in our SSDC show. She holds a BFA in Dance from Webster University, and actually danced with me while I was attending Webster. J She will also take be teaching preschool and teen jazz. Our returning tap teacher is Sonya Deorr. She brings a wealth of knowledge and lots of enthusiasm to the studio. She will be taking on all levels of tap this year. An Adult Tap class will also be offered this fall on Thursday evenings, call for more information. We also have a new preschool teacher, Michelle Baldwin. Michelle has years of experience teaching everything from ballet to jazz and tap and even broadway. She will be teaching her own preschool classes, as well as teen ballet, and helping out with my preschool class while I’m out. I will continue to teach all levels of ballet, pointe, jazz, broadway, Pre/K classes, etc.

5. The baby…As most of you know, I am having a baby this fall. I am planning on teaching for as long as possible until my due date - which is Sept. 30th. I plan to be home with the baby until Thanksgiving break—about 6 or 7 weeks depending on when the baby decides to arrive. J I have arranged to have Lisbeth Brown take all my ballet/pointe classes as well as Wed. evening SSDC rehearsals. Sarah Flatt will take 2 of my Cecchetti classes (she has taken her Cecchetti teachers exams through grade 5 and is currently working on 6), new teacher Michelle Baldwin will take my preschool class, and I have 2 teachers lined up for jazz classes on Thursdays. All of these teachers are incredibly talented and I trust them completely with my classes while I am away.

6. Classes begin this year on August 31st. Why so early? I am starting a week earlier to get in some extra time with the students before I leave and also so that I can have more time at home with the baby later. Because we are starting a week earlier, the studio will be taking a 3 - week winter break this year. However, we will still have the same amount of weeks in the semester.

7. Monthy newsletters: You can opt to receive the studio newsletters through email. Just print it clearly on your child’s registration form. We had some problems with incorrect addresses last year, so if you have a new email account or think I may have the wrong address – please include it again. I will still send home the newsletters with the students, but many times the papers have a way of disappearing before they make it back to you.
The newsletters will always be posted on the website. So if you lose one or forget a date you can always check the website. www.dancestation.biz
Contact Info: If need to talk to me personally while I am out - or any time for that matter - my home phone is 288 –7082. I screen all of my calls at home through the answering machine, so just leave me a message and I will call you back as soon as I can. Even better, you can email me at: edancestation@yahoo.com
That’s it! Tuition costs have remained the same, as well as State Street company dues. Class descriptions, dance attire, weather policies, etc. are included in the pamphlet and on the website. New pictures, including many from last year’s recital, are posted on our website. Recital pictures and DVD’s will be available at Open House.

A calendar will be sent home with the students the first week of classes.
Reminder classes begin Monday, Aug 31.
Can’t wait to see you all! Remember to call with any questions!!!
Thanks, Elizabeth Conway

Also pointe students should make a special effort to keep up their technique over the summer.

Class Descriptions
(some of the following classes need teacher evaluation for placement–call if you are unsure)

Beginning Ballet/Jazz/Tap (6-8yrs and 9-12yrs)

designed to be a fun class combining technique with costumes and props that belong to the studio.
(Students should wear leotard, tights, pink ballet shoes, and black tap shoes).

Teen Ballet/Jazz (age 13 and up)
A class for older students wishing to learn the basics of dance. This class will touch on ballet and jazz movements to prepare the students for fall classes. Fun and fast paced, this is no baby ballet class! Also a great class for the color guard girls/boys.

Announcements/Reminders: Lots and lots of information—PLEASE READ ON!!!

1. Picture Day is Saturday, May 30th. Usually we do weekday pictures the week before the recital; however, because of snow days I have several students that don’t finish school until June 4th. Pictures are taken by Photographique here at the studio and payments should be made directly to Photographique that day. We would appreciate it very much if you would show up for the group pictures, even if you choose not to buy any. The daytime picture schedule will be posted by the door in the waiting room later in May.

2. State Street Dance Company Auditions for next year will be held in May.
Why?…because we will be starting a few pieces at the end of the summer before regular classes begin. Students in Ballet III and older, with minimum 4 years dance experience (or permission of the director), are all eligible to audition. Generally the younger students perform in 2-3 pieces, and the older students in 5 or more. Junior and Senior company members will rehearse the week of August 24-28 in the evening.
Auditions are from 5:00-6:15 PM on May 29th; students should wear pink tights and a black leotard and have their hair in a bun. The audition will consist of a ballet and jazz combinations.

3. Dress Rehearsal is on Friday June 5th at McKendree College. Maps are available. Rehearsal for The Enchanted Island performance is from 12pm-4pm (arrive at 11:30am), and The Firebird rehearsal begins at 5pm. We hope to be done by 9pm. Usually we start earlier in the morning, but McKendree has a function in the auditorium until 11am.

Recital Day is June 6th at McKendree College. Showtimes are:
The Enchanted Island 2:30 PM
The Firebird 7:00 PM

4. Tickets will be on sale at the front desk the week before the recital. Adult tickets are $8 and children (under 12) are $5. If you have a child or children in both shows you will receive one free ticket per family to the 2nd show.

6. Sign up sheets for recital DVD’s and flowers will be in the waiting room later in May. The cost of each DVD is $20. You must prepay to have a DVD ordered for you.

7. Sign up sheets for our summer sessions are also in the waiting room. We have some fun classes and guest teachers this summer. Please sign up by the end of May.

8. There is no class on Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day. The last day of regular class is Monday, June 1st. (however, there maybe a night-time rehearsal for older ballet students if necessary)

Full cast rehearsals The last few days of the semester are reserved for extra rehearsal times here at the studio. Your child will be needed outside of their regular scheduled class time!!! Younger students can be picked up directly after their piece has finished (so they don’t have to sit for the entire rehearsal).

Sat. May 30th = pictures

Mon. June 1st = all regular classes, 6:30-9:30pm Firebird run through
(Adv. Ballet and Ballet V only)

Tues. June 2nd = Enchanted Island Dress Rehearsal 4:30-6:30pm, and SSDC
      rehearsal 7-8:30

Wed. June 3rd = B-way Jr 4:30-5:30pm, Firebird Dress Rehearsal 6-8pm,
Int and Adv B-way 8-9:30 pm

Thur. June 4th = Lights/Camera/Action 4-6pm Dress Rehearsal, and 6:30-8:30pm Jazz/Tap/Modern/B-way evening show Dress Rehearsal

please make good use of street parking during the large rehearsals

Costume instructions will be passed out when the costumes arrive later in May.
Have a wonderful month, see you at the recital!!! Thanks, Elizabeth

SSDC students/parents: I goofed! Rehearsal on May 16th will be in the afternoon - O’Fallon Graduation is at 10 am that morning.
